Aeriae track AMay, live recording w controllerist rig
« on: September 02, 2008, 11:30:49 PM »
I made a live recording of my track AMay yesterday as performed on my rig. I think the live version of this song is getting into shape now. You can download it here:

The (bass)organ is more heavy in this mix than is ideal, otherwise things sounds pretty good.

My setup is a Macbook Pro running Live and Reaktor, a Novation 25 Remote SL to the left of that and an M-Audio keystation 49 to the left of that. In Reaktor I started off with some of Moldover's templates and edited them a lot to suit my setup. It's a combo of beatlookup, the fader punchers, some smartknobs and some other Reaktor and Live effects.

I don't use any of the smart-mixing techniques 'cos for the most part I'm not mashing others tracks together, or when I do they're not 'by surprise'. When I do mash in a couple in the last act of this track for instance, I already EQ'd them so that they fit in the mix bandwidth.

Overview is that I play a lot of the organ parts live, at times looping them or just letting Live run them. At other times I go do FX, mixing or mashing with the Novation.

-----------------------------------------------------
Track rundown for knowing how what was done purposes:

I play all the organ on my keyboard until 1:10 - then I let Live take over that part and I can go play with samples, mixing and FX on the Novation.

I got the keyboard idea here from Howard Jones. I'm a rubbish keyboard player compared to Howard Jones, but I read what he does in live performance is play all the parts in live, then he can set them looping or call them as needed.

1:53 I go back to the keyboard and play the bassline.

2:46 Leave keyboard and hit up the FX and samples on the Novation again.

3:30 Back to the keyboard, playing the organ and mix it in.

We come to the 'church organ solo', which my friend Cloudy says 'is a bit of a bringdown', but I still like it.

4:20 Hit the button - my keyboard part starts being recorded into Live at this point.

4:40 I hit the button again - my keyboard part is now looping, my hands are free to go back to the Novation

5:05 Start mashing in a track by Asia Argento

5:26 Start mashing in beats from own track 'Clique' on top

Then with the craziness.

Enjoy.
