erm...... Hello....
« on: September 22, 2008, 06:50:03 PM »
I'd just like to start this message by saying WOW!!!... (not a word I use that often.)

I got here by watching the 'Moldover' vids on youtube... I haven't been this excited since I saw Grandmaster Flash scratching in his kitchen in 'Wild Style'...... tru!!!

I've been using Ableton for a couple of months now and had no idea of the kind of shit that I could/should be doing.... I have been buzzing all day since I saw the vids... thinking about how I can manipulate the f*ing things in my head........  couldn't wait to get back from work.

I haven't even 'scratched the surface yet,' ...... but I have been truly inspired.

I am by no means a controllorist.... but the idea's I've been having, just about mixing up sounds...... lets just say I've removed the blinkers.

So,..... to all the controllorists out there.... keep it up..... It's hot!!!! It's the future of sound manipulation....I hope to learn a lot while I'm here..... I hope no-one minds me asking stupid questions....

Sorry to sound like a dick but I've been more inspired by these few vids to make some shit than I have been listening to thousands of songs...... #I'm so excited....... and I just can't hide it!!!!....# :)

PS.... Special props to MOLDOVER...... I don't know you, but I'm inspired by the stuff you do,.... Anyone who mashes up AC/DC with Dolly Parton is cool in my books. PS the Stevie Wonder 'Sir Duke' loop was a touch of genious...... I love the song but you spotlighted the funk.... keep it up. I wish you and everyone the best. You could have kept all your secrets to yourself, but a true innovator passes on their knowledge to help others spread the word..... WORD!!!!

(The secret of a good story is not in the writing of the story..... the secret of a good story  is in the re-writing...)

God Bless The Funk!!!

There is no such thing as a stupid question my friend. The day you stop asking questions is a sad one indeed. I had a thousand questions before I got involved in this. It is inspiring though, isn't it. Seems that this page is not as clicky as a lot of DJ sites tend to be. This concept that Moldover has championed is indeed the future of music creation now - Ableton is a good place to stay. It needs to be recognized as a customizable tool. My partner and a friend that is graduating from turntableism over to Ableton had such a hard time wrapping their heads around what exactly Ableton is and the "best way to go about using it". The truth is that there is no best or worst way - It all depends on what the final goal is. Ableton simply enables you to do this. It has so many options and possibilities that you can't install it and then go "alright - This is how we are going to do it" - It takes time and messing around and re-arranging things. We finally got to a point where we have a very healthy blend of other artists' work - entire songs by other artists or us, loops, clips, and even two to six or even nine-minute-long loops. Everything we load into our sets in Ableton is looped, but Ableton allows you to tell a clip that when it has played out, then it can start a different clip above the first or below it - Wherever. Too many options? Maybe - but it is great to have that kind of a dilemma don't you agree? You need to decide what you want to accomplish first and then go about making Ableton accommodate that "mission'. It is a tool's tool really. Also, you will learn, that these options themselves will inspire new ideas that have not dawned on you yet. It is quite fertile territory - controllerism.

I totally agree. I've been writing music on fl studio since it was back with Fruity Loops 3, but I've always felt that there had to be something better. Something that would just make life a lot  easier, and if not, at least allow me the options to do something about it. I bought an Oxygen 8 a while back that came with live but never really messed around with it too much. I bought it mainly so that I can perform things live, but the live mode in FL is horrible, at least to me, I haven't figured that damn thing out. Anyway, I stumbled across Moldover's vids, and I saw how he just seemlessly placed all of these things together. Making it looks incredibly easy. I was blown away, my dreams, right there before me. So I plunged into ableton reading/watching everything I could on it and using controllers, and led me to here. And holy crap I'm glad this place exists. I just hope that I can hurry up and get a handle on all of this. It's really a lot to take in, but I'm doin my best. Slowly but surely. I definitely see this being the future of music production. As time goes on this artform will become increasingly popular and widespread, allowing for much more rapid innovations and whatnot. Blah, I ramble.

Point is, I'm friggin inspired, I can't wait to master this.

The controllers are endless. There are so many ways to control Ableton with footswitches, controllers, any MIDI capable device. You can even control Ableton with a Korg KP3 Kaoss Pad! Ableton Live 7's MIDI clock is so tight and reliable that there is no limit to the amount of MIDI gadgets you can attach or chain to the laptop. Lots of possibilities. It is up to you how you are going to use it. This is all good as Ableton does give you many different options of how to use it.
