Well, I've never done this but for 20 bucks you can buy a sweet jewelery case from walmart and 10 bucks more will buy you a tube of expanding insulation foam from home depot. 15 bucks for white glue and black spray paint, but you'll likely have that lying around.

1. Knife the shit out of the lid of the box or whatever. make grooves so the foam will stick to it. Then spray the foam, and use a reciprocating saw, dremel, exacto knife, whatever to cut the lid pad to shape. Use white glue to smooth it over, and then paint it if you wish.

2.Cover your gear with saran wrap (WELL!) and then add a layer of wax paper so the foam won't stick. Use pins or jenga blocks or whatever to figure out how high your gear needs to be in the box. Fill the box with foam and hold your gear in place. !THE FOAM HARDENS REALLY FAST, MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHERE YOU WANT TO HAVE THE SLOTS BEFORE HAND!. I would also use jenga blocks to make a route for your cables to go. It probably won't be pretty, but you can pretty much use and exacto knife to clean out extra foam. Then use a tub of white glue to fill in any holes and make it look smooth.

I figure this project would take about 2-3 hours +drying time for the glue to do it right.

That's how I would make a cheap hard case. I actually am planning on doing this for my HP touch desktop (There aren't really any hard cases that will fit, you have to forge your own sometimes), with some added mofo fans for cooling. That way I can lay it down flat in front of me and use it as a controller+wicked ghost story effect on stage.

yeah that is a good plan, I had a flash and found some cheap hard case's of ebay for £40 pretty tough like.
Got some foam cut to size and used a spray mount glue, to secure on the inside of the case, then secured the foam in place (used alot of spray, do it outside with a mask or you end up high as a kite as i found out first on the first case) i also took the lids off and replaced the hindges with catches, so the lid comes off, so it will not fall on my fingers. Then i cut shapes out of the foam for the controllers, then i covered the foam in a large black electrical tape, this has a rubbery texture which keeps the controllers secure and gives the foam extra rigidity, i can turn it upside down and they don't fall out. Now all i have to do is cut slots in the foam for wires and usb's. I am going to use smaller colored tape to cover these cuts in the foam, I m going to secure the controllers and usb with the small electrical tape to, then label all my fx etc and some costume stickers should have a sweet little set up going to put a video on youtube once I'm done cheers for the interest got some good ideas from this.  Grin

yeah, hardcases are definately an improvement over jewelery boxes lol. I love catches too, all the lids on my roadcases are removable. I was kind of stuck on jewelery boxes because I do kind of an electro indie band type thing, similar to Hunz. The jewelery boxes look cool on stage. I'm currently looking for a nice finished wooden box that is big enough to house a light-bright in. I'm planning on just mounting the black dot matrix to the front of it, and having arcade button modded nanopad in the top. That way, I can have the trigger finger drums, and the light bright will be akin to a custom bass drum skin with a logo on it.

Anyways, glad the road cases worked out for you, I'm sure lots of people around here will be trying your solution out and I'm sure they'll be pleased with the results. I'll be waiting for the youtube video.
